Scoliosis Screening Scoliosis is a disease of the spine often appearing in early adolescence, and causes a curvature of the spine in the shape of an "S" or "C". It can be caused in some cases by muscular disorders such as polio, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or by birth defects. 80% of scoliosis cases occur during a child's vital growth period around nine to twelve years of age. Unfortunately the exact cause of these cases is still not completely understood. A slight curvature of the spine may only require observation, but if the condition worsens, it can cause serious health problems and become a debilitating condition. Approximately 7% of adolescents have some degree of scoliosis, but only about 2% of those cases require active treatment. The earlier a progressive curvature is found, the better. The Scoliosis Screening Program coordinated by Easter Seals Louisiana is a simple and painless visual observation of the posture of 4th through 8th graders. The screening is done by a healthcare professional trained to identify the physical signs of scoliosis. The screening is not a diagnosis, and many children with signs of scoliosis will not have a curvature severe enough to require medical treatment. However, identifying a potential case of scoliosis early on affords time for medical observation and if needed, treatment for the condition.
